Real Bread Week at Spoon & Pinch: Why simple bread and toppings matter

Real Bread Week: A Return to Simple, Delicious Bread

Every February, bakers, bread lovers, and home cooks around the world come together to celebrate Real Bread Week— a week dedicated to bread made with care, simplicity, and real ingredients.

Taking place in mid-February each year, Real Bread Week is about slowing down, reconnecting with everyday baking, and appreciating bread in its most honest form. Whether you bake every week or are just getting started, it’s an invitation to make (or choose) bread that tastes good, feels good, and brings people together.

What Is Real Bread Week?

Real Bread Week was launched in 2010 by the Real Bread Campaign, a movement created to raise awareness about how much modern bread has drifted away from its roots.

At its heart, real bread is bread made without unnecessary additives or processing aids — focusing instead on flour, water, yeast or sourdough, salt, and time. The campaign encourages people to bake at home, support independent bakeries, and rediscover how good bread can be when it’s made simply and with care.

When Is Real Bread Week?

Real Bread Week usually runs for nine days in mid-February, from the second-last Saturday of the month through to
the final Sunday. The exact dates change each year, but it always falls at a
time when many of us are craving warmth, comfort, and food that feels
grounding.

This year it takes place from February 21st to March 1st 2026.

What Happens During Real Bread Week?

There’s no single way to take part — and that’s the beauty of it. During Real Bread Week, people are encouraged to:

  • Bake bread at home, whether it’s a simple everyday loaf or something more rustic
  • Learn more about what’s actually in the bread they eat
  • Support local bakeries that make bread without artificial additives
  • Share loaves, recipes, and baking moments with others

It’s not about perfection or complicated techniques — it’s about confidence, flavour, and enjoyment

Baking Better Bread: Simple, Everyday Improvements

If you want to take part in Real Bread Week at home, here are a few simple, realistic ways to do it:

  1. Start with One Reliable Loaf

Choose a bread recipe you know works and focus on getting great flavour and texture rather than trying something new every time. Consistency builds confidence. If you’re taking part in Real Bread Week and want a reliable place to begin, we always recommend starting simple. Our basic white bread recipe is our go-to foundation for everyday baking, designed to work consistently and build confidence. It can be made by hand or stand mixer, in a bread maker, or in a Thermomix, making it easy to fit into real life. Once you have this loaf in your repertoire, it becomes the perfect base for exploring our seedy multigrain and tomato bread creations — and for adding simple toppings that let good bread truly shine.

  1. Upgrade Your Everyday Bread

If you already have a favourite go-to bread recipe — or once you’ve mastered the Spoon & Pinch basic white bread — real bread doesn’t have to be complicated. With a small, thoughtful tweak, a familiar loaf can become something completely new.

Adding seeds, grains, or a flavourful bread concentrate is one of the easiest ways to elevate everyday bread without changing your whole routine or learning an entirely new recipe. Our Rustic Multigrain Bread Creation and Rustic Tomato Bread Creation are designed to work with your existing baking habits: you simply add a portion to your usual dough, adjust the white flour slightly, and bake as normal.

The result is bread that’s deeply seedy, grainy, and full of character — the kind of loaf you can feel good about eating. These concentrates are not only incredibly fun to experiment with, they bring colour, texture, and flavour to your baking while keeping the process reassuringly familiar. It’s real bread baking, just with more personality — and without the fuss.

  1. Focus on Texture as Much as Taste

A good loaf should have structure, chew, and character. Ingredients like seeds, grains, or even small cubes of firm cheese add interest and depth — without overcomplicating the process.

One of the easiest ways to bring both flavour and texture into your bread is by using Spoon & Pinch flavourings. They’re designed to slot straight into your everyday baking, making it simple to experiment while keeping your bread baking routine familiar.

Whether it’s the savoury warmth of tomato & garlic, the comfort of cheese & herb, or — for those with a sweet tooth — Sweet ’n Spice, these blends add layers of flavour without tipping bread into being overly sweet or heavy. Sweet ’n Spice, in particular, is perfect for satisfying a gentle sweet craving while still keeping bread balanced and wholesome.

It’s a small addition, but one that transforms a basic loaf into something memorable — real bread with texture, flavour, and personality.

  1. Bake to Be Eaten, Not Just Admired

Real Bread Week is about bread that’s meant to be sliced, toasted, shared, and enjoyed — not just photographed. A beautiful loaf is nice, but what truly matters is flavour, texture, and how good it tastes once it’s on the table.

That’s where Spoon & Pinch comes in. Our blends and flavourings are designed to deliver depth, balance, and real character — so your bread doesn’t just look good, but tastes good too. Bread should be baked to be eaten, and enjoyed, again and again.

Baking Real Bread with Spoon & Pinch

At Spoon & Pinch, we believe real bread should be achievable for home bakers, not reserved for professionals. That’s why our products are designed to work with your usual baking habits, not against them.

About Our Seedy & Flavourful Bread Creations

Our Rustic Multigrain Bread Creation is a seed-rich concentrate that can be added to your usual white bread recipe (simply adjust the amount of white flour), or baked using our basic recipe. It delivers depth of flavour, a satisfying bite, and a dark, bakery-style crumb — perfect for everyday real bread baking.

Our Rustic Tomato Bread Creation brings natural colour and savoury flavour to homemade loaves, using dried vegetables, herbs, and sourdough elements. It’s an easy way to create bread that feels special, without adding complexity.

The Three Basics That Make Baking Reliable

Real bread doesn’t need shortcuts — but it does benefit from consistency. Our three core products help home bakers achieve dependable results:

  • Yeast – for steady, reliable fermentation

  • Booster (Flour Improver) – to support gluten strength and structure
  • Dough Creamer

    – for improved softness, crumb, and keeping quality

Together, they help turn simple ingredients into loaves you can trust.

Back to Basics: Letting Bread Shine with Simple Toppings

One of the joys of real bread is how little it needs. When a loaf is well baked and full of flavour, the simplest toppings are often the best:

  • Butter & a pinch of salt – timeless, and truly unbeatable
  • Butter & honey – sweet, comforting, and perfect on toasted bread
  • Homemade pistachio butter – made from 100% pistachios, naturally nutritious, rich in healthy fats, and full of flavour

Pistachio butter is a beautiful example of how a simple spread can elevate everyday bread without overpowering it — letting the loaf remain the star. It’s also incredibly easy to make, which is why we’ve added a quick pistachio butter recipe this month as a special way to enjoy Real Bread Week. With its vibrant colour and fresh flavour, it’s a small but joyful addition that helps brighten even the darkest winter days.

Real bread doesn’t need hiding. It deserves to be tasted.

Real Bread for the Last of Winter

This February is a gentle reminder to return to real bread — bread made with care, simple ingredients, and flavours that don’t need hiding. And why not put something warm and inviting on the table, or take a loaf to someone you care about this Valentine’s Day? It’s a simple way to make the moment feel extra special, while still keeping things nourishing during the last of the winter months.
